A 6.5 in IELTS Writing is considered a decent score, but whether it is “good” depends on your goals. Here’s what it means and how it compares to common requirements:
For Study Abroad
If you are applying for an undergraduate program as a Pakistani student, mostly the requirement is 5.5 in each module. However, if you are applying for a master’s program, the requirement is usually 6 each.
Do keep in mind that some programs and universities may require a higher score. If you are just able to get the bare minimum, your options will be limited.
I recommend to all my students to go to a decent university abroad or not go at all. This is because markets in most countries are extremely competitive.
For Immigration
Most people from Pakistan try to go to Canada. A 6.5 in IELTS writing may meet the requirement but limit opportunities due extreme competition.
For jobs:
Depends on the employer and the nature of job. I recently had a student who got an opportunity to work as a geologist in Australia. The requirement was only 4.5 in each module.
How to Improve from 6.5 to 7.0+?
Work on coherence: Make sure ideas flow logically with strong linking words.
Expand vocabulary: Use precise, academic words without repetition.
Improve grammar: Reduce small errors in tenses, prepositions, and articles.
Practice complex sentences: Use varied sentence structures while keeping clarity.
Get feedback: A teacher or IELTS expert can help identify weak areas. We provide these services.
