How to Improve in IELTS Writing

1-Work on Reading

I have been an IELTS teacher in Pakistan for a long time and have noticed that most students struggle in IELTS writing because they lack reading skills.

When you are not a reader and have limited exposure to written English, you lack sentence variety, grammar and vocabulary.

If you are planning to take IELTS, I highly suggest that you set a daily reading goal to improve your English. However, do keep in mind that winning through reading is a long-term game and short-term wins should not be expected.

2. Plan Before You Write

Take a few minutes to outline your response before you begin writing. A well-structured answer helps maintain clarity and logic.

3. Use a Formal Tone

In the Academic Writing test, maintain a formal and objective tone. Avoid contractions, slang, and overly personal language.

4. Practice Time Management

You have 60 minutes to complete both tasks. Allocate about 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2. Ensure you leave a few minutes to review your work.

5. Understand the Scoring Criteria
